The epistemic consequences of pragmatic value-laden scientific inference

چکیده
Abstract In this work, we explore the epistemic import of value-ladenness Neyman-Pearson’s Theory Testing Hypotheses (N-P) by reconstructing and extending Daniel Steel’s argument for legitimate influence pragmatic values on scientific inference. We focus how to properly understand N-P’s reliability N-P. develop an account twofold replicability. refer these two distinguished aspects as “direct” “indirect”. discuss replicability experiments in terms indirect aspect outcomes direct aspect. argue that is beneficial indirectly. show while can be beneficial, its negative effects are also unavoidable some cases, with possibly being incongruent.

Pragmatic Encroachment and Epistemic Value
Does knowledge matter ? There are actually at least two questions behind this broad one. The first is whether the value of knowledge is independent from other epistemic values, such as the value of truth, or the value of having true beliefs. The second is whether knowledge, as an epistemic value is independent from other values, such as the good or freedom, which are practical or ethical values...

We offer a formal treatment of choice behavior based on the premise that agents minimize the expected free energy of future outcomes. Crucially, the negative free energy or quality of a policy can be decomposed into extrinsic and epistemic (or intrinsic) value. Minimizing expected free energy is therefore equivalent to maximizing extrinsic value or expected utility (defined in terms of prior pr...

Elucidating the cognitive, affective, and rewardprocesses that take place during music listening is the aimof a growing number of researchers. Several authors haveused the Bayesian brain framework and existing models ofreward to interpret neural activity observed during musicallistening. The claims from Friston and colleagues regardingthe role of dopamine, as well as the...

Balancing habitual and deliberate forms of choice entails a comparison of their respective merits-the former being faster but inflexible, and the latter slower but more versatile. Here, we show that arbitration between these two forms of control can be derived from first principles within an Active Inference scheme. We illustrate our arguments with simulations that reproduce rodent spatial deci...
متن کاملA Pragmatic Solution to the Value Problem of Knowledge
We value possessing knowledge more than true belief. Both someone with knowledge and someone with a true belief possess the correct answer to a question. Why is knowledge more valuable than true belief if both contain the correct answer? I examine the philosophy of American pragmatist John Dewey and then I offer a novel solution to this question often called the value problem of knowledge. I pr...
